Developing Independence & Self Regulation
We know that home is not school. Establishing a routine and empowering your child to plan and reflect on their day is an effective way to develop independence and self-regulation. One way to do this is to provide a structure that encourages them to review the range of tasks (learning and personal) for their day, make their own decisions for how they will go about it and set achievable goals. These goals can be used as checkpoints for your child to share with you throughout the day and a stimulus for reflection. Reflect & Debrief An end of day reflection will help a young person to develop critical thinking capabilities and self-regulation skills. Reflecting on their achievements and tuning into time when they felt more focused or distracted and make connections to what they contributing factors may be. Such as "the TV was off" or "I did some physical activity before I started" or "I wasn't hungry". Finally, finish with a chat about what they will do to improve tomorrow.
